What Does a “Totaled Car” Mean?

totaled car, total lossWere you in a recent collision? Your insurance agency may deem your vehicle a “totaled car” or “total loss.” What exactly do these terms mean, and what are the parameters for determining that a car is totaled?

The Definition of a Totaled Car

Insurance companies classify a vehicle as a total loss if repair costs exceed 75% of the car’s Kelly Blue Book value. Needless to say, a totaled car is beyond what a paintless dent repair or auto paint restoration can fix.

After an auto accident, you will have to bring your vehicle to a collision center. Doug’s Auto Collision Center works with most national and Bellevue-based auto insurance providers. We make the final determination if a car is a total loss. If not, we can restore the vehicle to its pre-collision factory condition. If damaged beyond repair, your insurance will send you a check equal to the value of the car before the collision.

If the car is salvageable, we’ll coordinate with your insurance provider for repairs. A rental car may be arranged for you in the meantime.

Additional Factors

The above definition of a totaled car sounds straightforward. However, the determining factors are actually more complex than that. The 75% rule may shift up or down depending on other variables, such as:

  • The car’s model year
  • Existing add-ons or modifications on the car
  • Whether the vehicle was a luxury or classic model
  • Contributory negligence—This is the degree of fault on your end that contributed to the collision.
